One Week Until Playoff Season

It’s almost the most wonderful time of the year for all hockey fans: Playoff Season! With only a week left in the regular season, things are heating up already. If you heard about the Flyers/Penguins brawl that occurred yesterday afternoon, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Now that most of the spots in the first round have already been clinched, this last week will be intense with the race to the eighth spot. So far for the Eastern Conference the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh...

Hockey 101: Playoffs

Hockey 101: Playoffs

So I didn’t write a hockey 101 blog last week, partly because I was on spring break, and partly because I’m not sure there is much more I can explain about hockey. So since the playoff season is going to start soon, I’m going to break down what happens during the playoffs. With less than two weeks left in the current season, it seems like prime time to do this. Who gets into the playoffs? In hockey there are two conferences: Eastern & Western,...

Preds and Wings Set to Clinch

March 26, 2012
BallHyped Sports Network

More news of two teams with the possibility of clinching a spot in the playoffs comes out of the Western Conference with the Nashville Predators and the Detroit Red Wings. So far there are only 11 spots left in the playoffs, and in the West only the St. Louis Blues and the Canucks have clinched. The Nashville Predators will be given a spot tonight, even though they are not set to play tonight. Their achievement of a playoff gig is contingent upon if both the San Jose...

March 24, 2012
BallHyped Sports Network

With less than a month left in the regular NHL season, some of the top teams in the league are already clinching their spots in the playoffs this year. The St. Louis Blues were the first team to due so in the West, while they remain ahead in the entire league.  So far they are the only team to due so in the Western Conference, but the Vancouver Canucks have clinched their division so it is only a matter of time before they too...

Blues Clinch Playoff Spot

Blues Clinch Playoff Spot

Who would have thought that the first team to clinch a spot in the playoffs would be the St. Louis Blues? Blues fans perhaps, but maybe not everyone else in the league. A first guess may have been more along the lines of The Rangers or The Red Wings, who seemed to be dominating the entire league for quiet some time. Although since their current injuries, they have been a less present force on the ice. The Blues seem to come out of nowhere...

Safety is the NHL’s # 1 Priority

March 12, 2012
BallHyped Sports Network

While it may not seem like safety is the top concern in the NHL right now with the amount of players on the IRL and it being “The Season of Concussions”, but the NHL is constantly discussing on how to maintain safety for the players on the ice. This is one of the top items of discussion on the agenda today at the General Managers meetings, which will be taking place over the course of the next couple of days. Since the absence of...

Hockey 101: Positions

Hockey 101: Positions

So far I’ve talked about penalties, shots, hockey lingo and hat tricks, so today I’m going to explain the formation on the ice and what each player does on the team.  First off, even if you don’t regularly watch hockey, the first thing to know is that the game is played on the ice.  The rink is divided into two zones by one red line that is down the center. This is called center ice and is where the start of each period has...

Miller is Back on Top

Miller is Back on Top

In the thick of the playoff crunch time, the Buffalo Sabres are out for the 8th seed and a spot in the playoffs. If the Sabres continue to play like they have been in the past few games, this goal might be achievable, which is all thanks to Olympic goaltender Ryan Miller. The Sabres have won their last three games, mostly due to Miller’s ability to block shots and keep them out of his net, evident by his back to back shutout wins earlier this week....

Hockey 101: Shots!

Hockey 101: Shots!

No I’m not talking about the alcoholic kind, but the type of shots hockey players have to take in order to score a goal.  Top forwards have a special technique to shoot the puck behind the crease, but there are a few different ways to achieve a goal, depending on how play on the ice is fairing. Most of the time players probably don’t even think about how they are shooting,  but merely do it on instinct. So here’s my breakdown about what exactly...
