No Perfect Brackets on ESPN, Yahoo after Opening Round

So how’s your bracket looking after all those upsets in today’s NCAA Tournament? I know I’m ready to shred my NCAA Tournament bracket, along with my iPhone and my Yahoo Tourney app. But it sounds like the bracket fillers over on ESPN.com are in the same boat. According to ESPN, there are no perfect brackets in ESPN’s Tournament Challenge after the first round of the NCAA Tournament, thanks to a pair of 15-seeds in Lehigh and Norfolk State who came up with historic upsets...

When will the NCAA’s Bubble Burst?

When will the NCAA’s Bubble Burst?

With the NFL season coming to a close, I’ve been watching a lot of college basketball of late, eager for March Madness to tip off. For a refresher course on the state of Division I athletics, I watched author Charles Clotfelter’s presentation on “Big-Time Sports in American Universities” (C-Span Book TV) and was caught off guard by one of his stats about the NCAA’s 120  Division I-A athletic departments (those DI universities that play I-A/FBS football rather than I-AA/FCS). According to Clotfelter, who cited...

Why Murray State is not worthy of a top 25 ranking

Why Murray State is not worthy of a top 25 ranking

I’m just gonna get to the point here: Murray State is not worthy. First of all, if you’re like most people, you’re thinking, “What is Murray State?” Then you’re like, “Is that a college?” And, “Why is anyone writing about some college called Murray State?” And who the hell is Murray? First of all, Murray State is indeed a college — of about 10,000 students — in a place called Murray, Kentucky, which is located roughly, ah . . . I don’t exactly know....

Can Indiana Miss the Tournament?

January 27, 2012
BallHyped Sports Network

Imagine this: A team knocks off both a #1- and #-2 ranked squad, plus another top #20 team in a 3-week span . . . and doesn’t make the NCAA tournament. Is that even possible? Not likely, I’ll grant you that. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Indiana’s current slide — losing four of five — continues. And if it gets as bad as I suspect it will, the Hoosiers — who excited fans, only to disappoint them with a scary skid — could...

Happy Mother’s Day Mrs. Mayo

Alisha Mayo isn’t the only one receiving gifts this Mother’s Day.Over the holiday weekend, her son O.J. Mayo received some not-so-good publicity from EastSidePN about gifts he allegedly received while attending USC his freshman year.First Reggie Bush, now O.J. is finding himself in hot water over gifts he reportedly received as a Trojan. Why isn’t this a surprise?Division I college athletes have been receiving gifts for decades, especially at big-time college programs like USC. (I have a friend who played Division I water polo at...

WAC, Mountain West be stupidest

WAC, Mountain West be stupidest

Not sure why EastCoastSPN hasn’t picked up on this yet, but report cards are out and the NCAA has slapped 218 teams at 123 schools with sanctions stemming from poor academic performance as defined by Academic Progress Rates. Teams had to meet an APR of 925, which equates to graduating about 60 percent of a team’s scholarship players. While the numbers are getting better overall, a number of programs are still looking dumb and are losing scholarships in the process. And the WAC and...
