Captain Landeskog

With the CBA negotiations at a standstill a lot of fans have been speculating even more about a NHL lockout. There are two weeks left until the current CBA expires and things are not looking good.  But let’s not talk about that today, because for fans it’s kind of depressing. Instead let’s talk about some exciting non-lockout news that is happening in the NHL this off-season. The Colorado Avalanche have made headlines as of late by announcing rookie Gabriel Landeskog as their new captain. Landeskog is...

NHL lockout is looming ahead

Again, nothing is set in stone, so hockey fans better not be steaming as they read this. So far NO LOCKOUT has been announced, but in lieu of recent events there is the likely fact that it will happen. Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider has even mentioned that he thinks it’s inevitable.  Snider is one of the rare owners who believes the players don’t get paid enough, so if he’s calling it now it’s more than likely that it will happen. Still we’re pretty...

NHL Lockout News

NHL Lockout News

Don’t fret hockey fans, there hasn’t been a player lockout yet, but there is still the potential for one. After a lot of talks and negotiating the NHLPA have finally given their counter proposal to the offensive proposal the league owners first gave. An 11% cut to player right off the bat? That’s ridiculous. So it is obvious why the player’s association took so long to make a counter proposal. Which was patronized by commissioner Bettman when he said, “it’s obvious they took longer...

The Doan Dilemna

The Doan Dilemna

Pre-season is almost upon us (hopefully if the NHLPA and the league come to an agreement) but there are still some free agents out there that have yet to sign. Right now one of the questions being asked is where will Shane Doan sign this year? Doan has played for the Phoenix Coyotes his whole career. He’s actually only played for one other team, the 1995 Jets, but they are technically the same since it was after his first season in Winnipeg that the...

Staios Retires

In non-trade or signing deals news, New York Islanders Veteran Steve Staios announced his retirement yesterday via the NHL. Staios was drafted by the league in 1991, but didn’t play for the Boston Bruins until 1995 which he did so for two consecutive seasons. Then he was with the Vancouver Canucks from 1996-1999, and then he played two seasons for the now Winnipeg Jets, but the then Atlanta Thrashers. After his tenure with the Thrashers he played the most with the Edmonton Oilers where he reached...

Wake Up Hockey Fans!

Late last week Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren rocked the sleeping hockey community with news that Nashville’s Shea Weber had signed an offer sheet for $110 Million over the course of the next 14 years.  This shook awake all the Flyers fans and got their hopes up. Some were getting ready to go out and buy their Weber Jerseys, but then Nashville decided to just match the deal. Since Weber is a restricted free agent, so he has to stick to the deal, unfortunately...

CBA Negotiations Continue

CBA Negotiations Continue

The collective bargaining agreement negotiations have wrapped up for three days, but things aren’t over yet. The current CBA expires on September 15th, so the object is to come to some sort of agreement before the expiration date. So far, only the league have made demands, which we have seen come at a high price. The initial news of the demands leaked last week, and there was speculation that a potential work stoppage and player lockout could occur.  NHLPA Executive Director stated that even if an...

NHL Work Stoppage?

NHL Work Stoppage?

In the hockey world more free agency news has surfaced. LA has signed Dwight King for another two years, The Caps sign Mike Green for another three years, The Blues have resigned Porter, Peluso and Sonne, and the Buffalo Sabres have signed both Tarnasky and Brennan. This is all well and good, if there is a hockey season come October. Meetings have been happening to talk about what to do about the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which was determined in the last player lockout,...

Selanne the New Chelios

Selanne the New Chelios

I heard a joke a few seasons back about predictions for the next season, that being that 48-year old Chris Chelios was going to turn to dust if he continued to play.  Chelios then went and retired that season, but 42 year old Finnish right winger, Teemu Selanne might be in the league just as long. Selanne was one of the free agents left to sign while free agency frenzy was still going on, but he has since decided to sign a one-year extended...

What’s New In the NHL?

July 4, 2012
BallHyped Sports Network

Well to be frank, a lot of things, so let’s recap the big  events of the off season. So the draft happened after the NHL awards. While this was exciting, we won’t really know what will happen with these new guys until the pre-season starts and they show us what they are made of. So far, nothing too big like last season in terms of trades. Nothing that was too shocking at least. Sidney Crosby will pretty much be a Penguin until the end...
