LAKERS BABY

LAKERS BABY

Now that the dust, champagne, confetti and rioting has settled, let’s look back at some thoughts from a weekend in Vegas, my 32nd birthday (I’m feeling really old after this one) and, oh yeah, the Los Angeles Lakers winning the NBA Finals in five games over the Orlando Magic: I might not love Derrick Fisher as much as ESPN Radio’s homerish crew of Mike Tirico, Hubie Brown and Dr. Jack Ramsay, but damn did that dude save the trip and the birthday. I don’t...

Kobe vs. LeBron: Who’s the best closer in the game?

Kobe vs. LeBron: Who’s the best closer in the game?

According to Jeff VanGundy and ABC and ESPN and Fox Sports Net and Co.: Kobe Bryant is the “best closer in the game.” Well, Tuesday night he wasn’t. Two huge turnovers and missing 12 of your final 16 shots (not to mention 5 of 10 free throws) would suggest otherwise. But does this make Kobe any less of a “great closer?” Probably not. He is one of the best players of all-time, and certainly one of the most clutch players of our generation. As...

Ryantific, Kobe go MIA, but at least Farmar showed

Ryantific, Kobe go MIA, but at least Farmar showed

Thoughts from Tuesday’s NBA Finals Game 3, which the red-hot Orlando Magic won 108-104 over the Los Angeles Lakers: Where’s RK? Ryantific opts to hang out with the wifey rather than the boys and the Lakers lose their first game of the series. Coincidence? I think not. At least nobody threw garlic bread at the TV during this Lakers loss. Someone go get this guy out of his bunker. Kobe Bryant is the best closer in the game? All those costly turnovers late and...

Thanks But No Thanks

Thanks But No Thanks

Oh, ESPN —could I please go to the ESPYs?  And only $500 for a VIP pass?  Shoot, I’ll take two.  Wait no, make that a dozen.  I’m sure these will be selling like freaking HOTCAKES on craig’s list by the end of the month.  Seeing as how I’ve been a valued Insider for the past five years and never received an e-vite before I’m forced to assume you’re having a harder time filling the ol’ Nokia Theater this time around and I’d be tempted...

That’s Your Fantasy Man

That’s Your Fantasy Man

Eeeesshh.  Alex Rios, your fantasy bum outfielder caught on camera dropping a few F-bombs on his fans.  At a charity event.  After he went 0-5.  With 5 Ks.  On your fantasy roster.  Oh but don’t worry because, you know, he apologized for his behavior, so it’s all cool now.  Alex, buddy, you’ve been killing me all year.  Your OBP is a paltry .325, which is roughly 325 points higher than your people skills.  Look man, we get it, it’s hard being a professional baseball...

The Hangover, thumbs up. The Finals, thumbs down.

The Hangover, thumbs up. The Finals, thumbs down.

Tonight’s game was not a classic, be happy you didn’t pay $4,000 to see it in person – 15-15 after a quarter, 20 turnovers by the Magic, who got homered to death by the officiating crew in Los Angeles, and they still managed to force overtime: that’s how bad the Lakers played — just one game after putting together one of their best games of the postseason. The refs might have been worse. Where’s Joey Crawford when you need him? Dwight Howard blocks a...

Things in sports that annoy me: ESPN News

Things in sports that annoy me: ESPN News

The concept of ESPN News was pretty good: We’ll create a sports channel you can visit  any time to see all the day’s highlights. Sounds pretty good to me. Except that ESPN News is lame. You’d think a channel devoted to nothing but sports highlights would give you thorough coverage of sports, right? You’d think. First of all, the overhead at ESPN News must be pretty favorable. Because they basically air the same half-hour broadcast for 24 hours. So there’s not a lot of labor costs there....

Road Trip: BG and G Slim go to a Dodger Game

Road Trip: BG and G Slim go to a Dodger Game

Yeah, I’m on record as saying I wasn’t going to a Dodger game this year until Manny came back but with the girlfriend out of town and G Slim and I with nothing better to do, Chavez Ravine was on the docket last night.  Thankfully there was minimal traffic and we got a prime spot on Academy Way with minimal fuss (why anyone pays $15 to park in that horrid parking lot is beyond me).  If you missed last night’s game it was sick–Moyer...

Things in sports that annoy me: flat bills in baseball

Things in sports that annoy me: flat bills in baseball

Yeah, I probably should write about how great the Lakers were, and Kobe this and Kobe that, and blah, blah, blah. But, you know what? That game was a dud. A Snooze Fest. A bore to end all bores. And, besides, B$lim has me on the record saying the Magic would win a thrilling series. So I gotta distract your attention, sort of like ole Dick and George with the Iraqs. So to hell with basketball championships. I wanna talk about stuff that annoys me....
