Cilic beats Nishikori in U.S. Open
Croatia’s Marin Cilic won his first major final on Monday, beating 10th-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-3, 6-3, 6-3…
In one of the craziest endings in 100 years of racing at the Indianapolis 500, rookie JR Hildebrand crashes into the wall on the final lap of the Indy 500.
The wreck allowed Dan Wheldon to win his second Indianapolis 500, edging Hildebrand, who skidded across in second place.
After the race, John Barnes probably summed it up best, when he said his driver, Hildebrand, “drove the wheels off that car today.”
Hildebrand literally “drove the wheels off,” at least one of them, finishing the race and skidding across the finish line on just three wheels as his front right wheel barely hung on its impact with the wall in Turn 4.
“It’s just a bummer to come up second,” Hildebrand said after.
Wheldon was running just his first race of the season for Bryan Herta Autosport, pushing hard over the final couple laps to run from fourth to first behind a fuel strategy reminiscent of his last victory at Indy.
“I just kept pushing,” Wheldon said. “… It was a dream ride.”
