Wings For The Cup?

While the Rangers are taking care of business on the East Coast, the Detroit Red Wings are on fire right now. They just got the go for the Winter Classic next year, in which they are hosting and are leading the entire league with 78 points. If that wasn’t enough for them, the Wings haven’t lost in their home arena since November. Last night they edged the visiting Philadelphia Flyers in a 3-4 hockey victory to log their 20th straight home win.

OK all non-Detroit fans say it with me: I freaking hate the Red Wings.

But the Red Wings didn’t have that solid of a start to the season, they actually had a six game losing streak back in November, but apparently the team has kicked it into high gear by hitting a record wining steak that has only been done by two other hockey clubs. Which also has not been done in 32 years. Now they just have to keep on wining in order to break that fantastic record.

It is not wonder that the Red Wings are on such a high right now, considering the hockey powerhouses they have on the ice like Johnan Franzen, Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk. All three of whom got the “NHL three star picks” for their performance in last night’s game. Even goaltender Macdonald was on his game last night, by managing to stop pucks that the flyers were trying to get past him but to no avail. Perhaps not as a strong brickwall like Ranger’s Ludqvist, but Macdonald can and has kept up considering the franchise’s current streak.

With their current season at a ridiculous streak, who is to stop them at getting to the cup? Well the Rangers for one, but in the West The St. Louis Blues and the Vancouver Canucks are hot on their trails with 75 and 74 points respectively. The Canucks are following a lose of the Cup from the previous year, so it will be no surprise that they will be amped to defeat Detroit when it comes to playoff season. However if Detroit continues to be such a dominating force, the Canucks or the Blues might be out for the count. So will Detroit play for the Cup?

Most likely, but as a East Coast hockey fan, I hope not.
