Melky Just Made Barry’s Case

My first memories of Melky Cabrera are always him as a Yankee. Seemed to be a fairly decent player, but not much better than average. Could make some plays, get a hit or two, but nothing more than that.

Fast forwarding to his first season in Kansas City where the “Melkman” put up a 200 hit season. No red flag but deserving congrats were on hand for a good veteran player who reached a milestone.

Then comes his play in San Fran. Not only was he putting up career numbers, yet again, but he also made the all star game and won its MVP award. He was eventually busted for testosterone which put all of his old stats under a quick and brutal microscope.

Before the 200 hit season in Kansas City, Melky never had over 150 hits in any of those seasons. They guy never even batted close to .300, posting a then high .280 batting average in 2006 with the Yankees.

To my point, aren’t roids supposed to make you hit home runs? According to the super critics of Barry Bonds, the steroids are the supreme reason for him and his record setting seasons/career.

With all of Melky’s increasing hits, he still never hit more than 20 homers in a season and only had 11 this season at the time of his suspension. His 18 homers was a bit of a jump. A jump of a whole five homers he posted in 2009.

What Barry did was phenomenal and what Melky did was not, to say the very least. Not to compare the two individuals because you simply can’t. One had all world talent and the other has been barely ok throughout his career.

Essentially, Melky needed roids to be good. Barry was already great before “the cream and the clear”, which I am still confused by. It was Barry’s supreme talent that played the biggest part in his triumphs.

Barry will be on the ballot this year for the Hall of Fame, along with Roger Clemens. As tricky and agenda driven as that ballot will be, there is no telling how it will actually turn out.

Quite possible the government may have put Clemens in and Melky could have just done the same for Bonds. In fact, I am about sure they could pull up every player that tested for positive for roids and figure out what should be quite easy to see. Bonds was talented, never needed whatever it was he allegedly took. Those players were not as talented and needed something extra.
